Installation / Windows

Install on Windows, from ZIP to first launch.

Choose the right program package, point the launcher at your PS4 Remastered files and keep your first setup easy to troubleshoot.

Base guide: v2.4.1 · Editorial review · 18 October 2026 · Primary sources

The download page tracks newer releases. For the manually reviewed 2.5.0 control and frame-rate changes, read the update note. Check the notes for your installed version before applying older steps.

Before you open the launcher

You need Windows 10 version 1903 or newer, or Windows 11, in 64-bit form. The CPU must support AVX and the graphics driver must provide Vulkan 1.3. The requirements guide explains what these checks establish.

Prepare your own extracted PS4 Remastered game folder. It should contain eboot.bin, sce_module and sce_sys. The maintainer lists CUSA01623 and CUSA01715, versions 01.00 and 01.02, as tested. A PS3 copy is a different build and is not the input for this project.

The community program contains no game files. Download the launcher through the project release guide, then keep the program and your game folder separate so they are easier to identify.

Extract and start

  1. In the GitHub release assets, choose gow3-windows.zip.
  2. Extract the whole ZIP into a writable folder, such as C:\Games\gow3-windows. Do not start the launcher while it is still inside the archive.
  3. Open God of War III.exe. This is the setup launcher.
  4. The maintainer says the program is unsigned. If Windows flags it, stop and check the publisher, release source and file hash before deciding whether you trust it. This guide does not ask you to disable your security software.

A failed launch is useful information. Read the error or log instead of repeatedly starting the executable or adding random DLLs.

Select the game folder

  1. Click Choose the game folder. The launcher opens its Game page.
  2. Use Browse next to Game folder, then choose the directory that contains eboot.bin.
  3. Return to Home and check the detected title ID and version. These identify the files the launcher is about to use.
  4. If you have an update dumped separately, use the launcher’s Update folder setting rather than mixing unrelated files into the base folder.
  5. Choose your display, resolution and frame rate settings. Click Save, then PLAY.

The first launch prepares the game image. Shader compilation can affect startup and later performance too. An apparent delay is not enough to diagnose a failure; read the status and log.

Make a simple first configuration

For diagnosis, change as little as possible between launches. Record your starting settings before trying a workaround. The project offers separate frame rate limit and engine frame rate controls; a larger number does not guarantee smoother play.

The release notes list some progress blockers at 120 or 240 FPS. If you reach one of those spots, the maintainer’s workaround is to select an Engine frame rate of 60 for that section, then change it back afterward. Read settings and controls for the relevant distinctions.

Find your files and the log

The default Windows data folder is user, beside God of War III.exe. It contains saves, shader cache and last_run.log. A custom saves folder can change the log location.

After initial setup, Play God of War III.exe launches with saved settings. You can add that shortcut as a non-Steam game if desired. Keep the user folder when updating, and make a backup before moving saves.

For black screens, failed image preparation or a crash, use the symptom guide. When reporting a bug, include the project version, GPU, driver, game build and the relevant log. Review logs for private local paths before publishing them.

What a successful setup does not prove

Reaching the launcher or the first scene does not establish that the full game works on your hardware. Release 2.4.1 carries forward known startup, loading, graphics and high frame rate issues. Keep a save from before a problem scene when you can; it gives the maintainer something reproducible.

Check the source

Instructions are based on the release README and 2.4.0 known issues carried into 2.4.1. Source changes can arrive before downloadable packages. We have not benchmarked the game.
