Troubleshooting

Find the symptom. Keep the evidence.

Use the community project's documented workarounds for black screens, crashes, texture problems and high frame rate blockers.

Base guide: v2.4.1 · Editorial review · 18 October 2026 · Primary sources

The download page tracks newer releases. For the manually reviewed 2.5.0 control and frame-rate changes, read the update note. Check the notes for your installed version before applying older steps.

Start with the log

Record the project release, game title ID and version, operating system, GPU and driver. Read Advanced → Log in the launcher, or find last_run.log in the default data folder:

  • Windows: the user folder next to God of War III.exe.
  • Linux: ~/.local/share/gow3.
  • Custom saves folder: check that folder for the log.

Keep a copy of the log after a failure before another launch overwrites useful evidence. Change one setting at a time and record whether it altered the symptom. Review local paths and other personal information before uploading a log publicly.

Black screen or immediate exit

The release README says the startup black-screen patch is included. Check the release you installed and read the matching release notes. If the failure continues, report the GPU, driver, game build and log.

A patch being included does not mean every black screen has the same cause. The current known-issues list still includes startup failures on some systems and on Steam Deck. Clearing shader cache is not a general startup fix; it also forces the cache to rebuild.

If the log reports missing CPU instructions, use the requirements guide. A graphics preset cannot add AVX support to a CPU.

Crashes when switching windows

Documented workaround: select Borderless display mode. The 2.4.0 release notes document a crash when using Alt+Tab from fullscreen. The stated workaround is Borderless display mode.

Switch that option, save, then repeat the action that triggered the crash. If it still fails, record the new result and report it with the log. Do not assume every crash after a window switch is the same tracked issue.

Orange textures or wrong lighting

Documented workaround: the release README suggests switching off Performance → GPU data → Deferred GPU readbacks, then restarting. It warns that the workaround may cause stutters.

The known-issues list also reports texture corruption after long sessions that temporarily clears after restarting. Keep your GPU, render resolution, driver and play duration in the report. Avoid presenting a temporary recovery as a permanent fix.

Release 2.4.0 notes bright areas becoming blown out at 480p and recommends 720p or higher while the relevant fix is reviewed. The 2.5.0 release reports a correction for excessive brightness at 480p, 720p and 900p. GPU-specific lighting problems remain, so record both the release and GPU when reporting a failure.

A path or button prompt will not advance

Documented workaround: set Engine frame rate to 60 for the affected section. The release notes list some progress blockers with Engine frame rate set to 120 or 240 FPS. Their workaround is to set that control to 60 for the affected section, then restore it.

On 2.5.0, the maintainer documents live switching with F9 or R3 + L1 + R1, including dropping to 60 at a blocker without restarting. Read the version-specific update.

Change Engine frame rate, not just the output frame limiter. If the same scene remains blocked, keep a save from before it and report the location, settings and game build.

Endless loading after a fight or transition

No confirmed universal fix in the reviewed notes. The 2.4.0 known-issues list includes loading that never completes after the Hades fight and when entering the Forge after the statue fight. The notes do not provide a confirmed universal fix.

Record the location and provide a save from before the problem if possible. Check upstream issues for that scene before filing a duplicate. Randomly replacing files or deleting saves removes evidence without establishing a solution.

Memory allocation or prepared-file errors

cannot create ... guest memory (error 1450): the release README identifies Windows virtual-memory allocation as the problem. Check memory pressure and page-file configuration. This is different from a missing-game-file message.

prepare failed: expected PS4 SELF: this error appears in the 2.4.0 known-issues list. Confirm that you selected the correct game folder and supported PS4 remaster build, then check the current issue before altering the dump. The source branch can contain changes that are not in your downloaded package.

GLIBC_2.44 not found on Linux: check the rebuilt AppImage instructions. Distinguish an older package from a system below glibc 2.39.

Build a useful bug report

Include:

  • The release tag and whether you use the packaged build or compiled source.
  • OS, CPU, GPU, driver and game title ID/version.
  • Exact steps to reproduce, the visible error and your relevant settings.
  • The log, plus a save from before the failure when relevant.
  • Whether the issue began after changing the project version or a driver.

Do not upload game executables or commercial game archives with the report. Use the maintainer’s issue tracker for runtime bugs and this site’s correction contact for mistakes in these guides.

Check the source

Instructions are based on the release README and 2.4.0 known issues carried into 2.4.1. Source changes can arrive before downloadable packages. We have not benchmarked the game.
